There are several graphics utilities that can be used to accomplish this that
I know of.
One of the first that comes to mind is "xv".  With xv you have a grab and an
autograb feature which will grab the contents of the window automatically
after a time period that you select.
You can also have xv automatically hide the "xv" window so that it doesn't
show in the capture.

You can also use "The GIMP"

You can use "ee" which I beleive is  "Electric Eyes" that apparently came with
RH 6.0 in place of "xv"..

There is a KDE application called "ksnapshot" that is designed specifically
for getting snapshots of desktops, or parts of desktops.

Dead last of all there's always the option of taking a picture of the desktop
with a camera, developing the film and then scanning it but, with all the
utilities above, why bother... :)
