Re: Blew IT

Some cables have a key, some do not. Some have a "tab" that fits a
notch in the socket, some connectors have a socket around them some
don't. :) No easy answers.

A pin 1 on a circuit board is usually square while the rest of the
solder points are round. When all else fails, that has served me well.

Pull the video card and reboot. When you hear the beep code, turn the
machine off and reinsert the video card. Most likely it will then boot
and you will have video. I have seen a fair number that will show no
video until a second boot after insertion of the video card.

Listen closely to the drives and see if they spin up and then do a sort
of a stutter thing. The sound is not easy to describe. If they spin
up, do the stutter sound, then what is almost a beep inside the drive,
the drives are probably okay also.

You might see if anyone in your area has a boot card. I have two. One
for simple diagnosis and one for situations like yours, that may need
much testing. You can tell exactly what internal test fails before the
board exits POST.

Try a different video card, I have seen them promptly fail when power is
applied. Motherboard failure is much less frequent.
