This is wrong I think, because I have GCC version  2.95.2, which is the
latest AFAIK. And I have had no problem whatsoever compiling the 2.2.17
Kernel available from www.kernel.org.

So I guess that this must be some other kernel or RH's modified kernnel...

Either way I suggest you to ditch whatever sources (which are obviously
broken) you are using, go to kernel.org and get the source for the 2.2.17
kernel, untar it to whatever directory you like, cd to it, and type make
xconfig etc....and enjoy!
