Hi Caroline.

It's pretty much useless. And it won't disable PAM for you so don't worry.
Auth can be used to check if the remote user has the rigth identification
and if it is it will allow him to continue to the authentication. Since
this identification can be easily faked it's just useless to have it
running.  Normally this feature isn't used and DOESN'T need to be
either, it can be a securityhazard to have it enabled.
