	I've had good luck with US-Robotics and Microcom modems, but mainly in the
form of multi-modem cards plugged into portmasters. I'm told the USR modems
are very good in general (Zoltrix and Zoom being the ones to avoid like the
plague). If you have a new-ish machine with PCI only then you should
DEFINITELY go for an external modem, since you are unlikely to be able to
allocate more than a total of 4 IRQ's to expansion cards, and odds are that
your USB controller and graphics card have sucked up two of these already
(IRQ sharing is theoretically possible with PCI devices if both devices
support it (most don't seem to and it's not easy to find out), but I have
never ever seen it work well. In my experience a machine attempting to do
IRQ sharing will crash every half-hour or so in Windows or every couple of
days in Linux if both devices are in use. Both devices will usually suffer
a serious performance hit too).
