if you _really_ want a minimal install
you'll have to learn what packages are needed,
whether you want to run the X gui
  start running rpm -e <unwanted packages>
i've gotten machines down to about 150-160 packages
this way (without the packages _you_ want loaded)

RH 6.2 and do the updates
you can get all the update rpms from
  ftp.metalab.unc.edu/pub/distributions/redhat/updates/
  in the i386.i686,noarch directories
do rpm -Fvh * while in the directory in which you put
the RPMs
it will probavbly complain about rpm and some other
not installed pkgs
  so rpm -Uvh rpm*.rpm,
     rpm -Uvh <the-missing-packages>
     then rpm -Fvh again

under 6.2 just click the Server install
