The asteriks above are not an indication of whether your present kernel
has these features or not. They are merely the default choices, and if you
have installed a kernel directly from the CD distribution, then you are
sure to have loadable module support enabled. This is a very essential
feature, and I don't think that anyone would disable this.
Did you compile your present kernel? If so, did you add sound support
to your kernel as such or as a module? If you compiled sound support as a
module and your sound card works, then your kernel supports loadable
modules.
