Can't initialize the kernel with the mem=xx param

I've successfully installed linux on my computer but the kernel only
recognizes 128 MB Ram and my system has 256 mb (2 128 dimms) installed on
it.
I passed the mem parameter to the kernel at the boot prompt (linux mem=256M)
but it crashed.

Thanks in advanced,

Diego
