Re: DNS Server Reliability - Is more Better?

as long as you "never" (or at least very rarely) drop that IP address it will be fine. I know several people who use a dynamic IP for their web hosting. The webserver should be 24/7 so it should never drop that IP and get a new one. Once it does drop that IP, (i.e. power outage and the box reboots) you will have to go out and reset whoever has your DNS entries to reflect your new IP, then you will have to wait for that new IP to propagate.

Subject: DNS Server Reliability - Is more Better?
Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 01:06:54 +0200

I just have registered a domain and is franticly searching for ways to host my own web server. I have a few leads, but there are some gaps left unanswered. GraniteCanyons free DNS service, I just read something about their servers being unreliable. Can multiple DNS servers from different sources be used to give that stableness? Having more than one and from different sources (ISPs, etc) will not cause problems, will it? My ISP does not provide a static IP, but uses Dynamic IP Addresses and will not cooperate with me. Even if I use a free DNS service, how will this work since I have no static IP address to configure in my settings of my server? Does anyone have any suggestions or a step-by-step guide as how they did it? One could register for IP addresses with ICANN starting at $2500.00 a year. I prefer not to go that route until I am well experience in this matter. Register.com has authority over my domain and I have trace the IP address to it. If I subnett the IP address, will it work? Why not. I allot of you out there I know will give many reasons to why I can't do it. This is the reason to why I seek for your well educated advice. Thanks.
