NIC questions

Let's start with, I have the driver source for my onboard NIC.  So I 
don't need to go hunting for it (thank you God).

My questions are these.

1. Do I need to recompile the kernal or (once I compile the driver 
source) can I just drop it into the appropriate directory?

2.  If I have to recompile the kernal, where would I find the best
how-to on doing a kernal recompile?
