I have an old i386 box with a Western Digital NIC in it (and floppy drive,
that's about it). I am currently trying to do an FTP install of 6.2 onto
the box but am running in to some problems.
I boot up with the boot disk (bootnet.img), enter the IP address, gateway
etc and choose an ftp site from which to down load the stage 2 (network)
image. I hit ok and my little NC<->10BT box lights up for about 5 seconds
which seems to show that there is a lot of traffic, then after about 5
seconds, it slows down and it seems that there is a packet here and there
and I can never get past this point. It does say that it found the ftp
site and that it is "downloading stage2 image" (or whatever the message
is.) I have tried multiple FTP sites to no avail. I even setup an
anonymous FTP site on my home computer and connected the two boxes (with
the straight through Ethernet cable) and the same thing happens.
At one point a couple of weeks ago, I downloaded and installed one of
those "single disk" linux disks and got the network going. I could ping
everywhere and telnet in to a computer at work. So it seems that the NIC
and cabling should be fine.
One other point is that I am connected to the net through my @Home
connection, don't know if that changes things, though I don't think that
it should.
Why do the packets come in a flurry and then die off so quickly? Any help
would be greatly appreciated!
Craig.
