You probably turned off xfs by mistake. Check and see if xfs (the X font server) is running before you run startx. If it isn't running, start it (/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start) and use chkconfig (? was that in 6.1?) to set xfs to start on boot in runlevels 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Or disable it xfs altoghether and remove the offending FontPath setting from your /etc/X11/XF86Config file.
Running xfs is pointless unless you want to serve fonts to someremote location, or you want to use true type fonts which arent supported by your Xserver.
