Thank you Matt. You have helped me once again. It was as simple as
restarting xfs.
I didn't even know that you had to start a font process. It sure is fun
learning new things about Linux (long way to go yet, though).

The error message said the font "fixed" could not be opened. By
disabling the font do you mean the font "fixed". I found no such font
in the conf file.
Just for my interest, would I be able to open X windows if I turned
off/disabled xfs. What fonts would I have to use instead?
