RH 7.1 MySQL, PHP

Has anyone had any luck with 7.1 and mysql with php?  I am trying to create
a database with mysqladmin create for use with phpnuke and it will not allow
root access.  I have left the password blank, tried it with setting a
password and such.  Still access not allowed for root localhost   If anyone
can help, also, RedHat did not even include the mysqladmin I had to get the
rpm from rpmfind.  If anyone has experience in setting up php with mysql and
phpnuke I could sure use the help and will be very appreciative of such
help.
