hello,

u r rite u can try xf86Configiurator. or if u have
redhat 6.2/7, then u should try to go to ur menu of
redhat--> text tool menu (for configuration like
sound, x window system) there go to x window
configuration & change ur settings. define those which
support ur monitor & vga card. for example select
640x480 and 800x600. 

i hope after logging out & then logging in again to ur
account it will work with both )640x480 and 800x600),
if so u can easily change b/w both of them using the
command (ctrl+alt++).
