A few things:
1) Your video card and video memory determine what the max
resolution/color depth/refresh rates you can send TO
the monitor.
2) XFree86-4 supports DDC, so it can as the monitor what
it supports.
3) You can tell X to TRY other settings, but you have to TELL
X to to that.
4) Modern monitors will not kill themselvs. They will shut down
and/or give you a message that the settings are bad. My cheap
19" monitor ($200) does that, so I'm sure the high-end ones
will to.
