Like I said it depends on the card and video memory.
The GeForce will probably do it. The Rage depends on which RAGE chip,
the Rage128 might, older one probably won't.
I don't have a clue about the Voodoo card.
My TNT2 will do 1600 on the cheap 19" monitor.
The new thing with XFree86-4 is the DDC support, to auto detect
the monitor capabilities, and support for newer cards.
My Optiquest V775 (17") does a much nicer looking 1600 though.
RedHat 4.1 will do fine too. As long as you have a driver for
you card. XFree86 will also do some truly strange resolutions,
like 752x564 and 936x702.
Look at the XFree86-Video-Timmings HOWTO to see how to set them up.
