7.1 install on laptop with trident cyber9388 video

I'm having trouble with the X configuration.  Some of my problems:

1.  I can run a normal install, lowres, nofb:  all which make the screen
just show 1/4 of the screen on the right of the display.  even text mode
is affected.  Yes I can boot to init 3, but if I try and startx then all
my video is screw so i can't see anything and all i can do it reboot it.

2a.  when i run a text install on 7.1:  It probes my machine and says:
    Video Card: Trident Cyber 9388 (generic)
    X server: XFree86

2b.  rh7.0 install it is probed as:
    Video Card: Trident Cyber 9388 (generic)
    X server: XF86_SVGA

3.  My monitor setting should be:
    31.5-48.5
    55-90

4.  My experience so far:

    install 7.0 - no problem
    upgrade 7.0 to 7.1 - no problem
    install 7.1 (laptop) - does not set video up correctly

5.  It would be nice to have it work under 7.1 from an install rather
than the 2 hour install, upgrade process.  (If i wanted that kind of
time, i'd put something else which is even more laptop incompatible out
of the box on it).
