Basic Defaults

How do I get the following things to work on boot up?

1 - NumLock - I've set the BIOS for it to be on but booting to RH6.0 turns
it off.

2 - Colors on my screen - I normally work in the command line mode and white
on black is OK but I've got the wonderful color monitor and would prefer a
different default setting.

3 - Anyone know of a document or HowTo that shows you how to do this type of
thing (I know there are others I'd like to do, change the prompt to show
more/less information.....)

All of this was second nature for me back in my MSDOS days and I miss some
of it.
