RE: code red virus

At the risk of starting a war let's not forget that unix makes a pretty good
target for hackers too.
While it's MUCH better than windoze it still has a way to go. At a couple of
University sites I know
there's a hierarchy of security alerts posted regularly. Of the unixes Linux
is at the top, Irix tends to be second, Solaris 3rd with the rest largely
left alone. And while it's not unix, I've never seen the VMS guys get done
even once in more than 10 years. Can't see everyone switching back to that
tho' somehow, just for security reasons.

Of course the there are reason's why the list is ordered the way it is.
Having sources published gives the bad guys something of a head start. Hence
the reason Linux is top of the list. Also the number of installations put
together by inexperienced users who just want a compute resource but don't
want to know about sys management contributes greatly. Irix is where it is
because IMO SGI never did that good a job on security. Ever seen out-of the
box Irix? The Andrex puppy could take it apart.

I guess in the end it's a case of "Let him who is without sin...". Until
some operating system offers all the features and ease of use for
non-technical users that Windoze does but with some security and stability
we're stuck with it.

Now, where's my GEC OS9000 book? ;-)

Have a nice day.

Joe.

You want to get your hands on the sick f***k that started this? His
name is Bill Gates and he works for the largest purveyor of insecure
and unreliable software in the world.

I can't wait to see what happens when hackers break into .NET servers
and start shuffling credit card data.

As you probably know (since you are a Linux user) the effects
on your box are merely corrolary results of the worm's port-scanning
activities. A firewall appliance would help.

I'll tell you what, that damned virus is affecting the web server on my
Linux box a lot.

My access and error logs are ballooning. I must be getting a hit every few
seconds from infected computers on my Speakeasy DSL network, 64.81.0.0. I'm
only on a 144K IDSL connection and it is slowing me down considerably. It is
very fortunate for me that I don't have anything critical on it, or I would
be SOL. Nevertheless, I would like to get my hands on the sick f**k that
started it,

Frank Reichenbacher
