one way would be to use:

    /sbin/mkbootdisk --device /dev/fdx kernel


"kernel" would be the name of the kernel under /lib/modules/<kernel>. 
 e.g., /lib/modules/2.2.16-22xx

    /sbin/mkbootdisk --device /dev/fd0 2.2.16-22xx
