Something tells me that you inadvertantly allocated all available
HDD space to '/'. I don't know why I would assume that, but if
I'm wrong please tell me.

No, or you wouldn't have even been able to format '/'.

Browse around during this process to see what is really happening
in the background. You have four so-called 'virtual terminals'
that you can use during the installation process. They are
accessed by ALT-F1 (default), ALT-F2, ALT-F3, and ALT-F4.
