Of course you are right, Kevin. The termination of the device is actually
the critical issue and scsi doesn't ever like losing termination, which is
what happens when you power off an external device that isn't designed for
that.

Really, this is a SCSI bus issue. Standard SCSI is not designed to
handle hotswapping like this. It somehow confuses the bus and/or
the termination. Don't do it under any OS. Hotswap hardware is
available that will work under many flavors of Unix, including Linux.
