Same kind of problems with my dual p200 all SCSI machine. Not only during
shutdown unfortunately. It seems to happen when the disk is heavily used
for example :

tar cf - . | (cd somewhere/else ; tar xf -) is fatal if . is large.

the linux up kernel does not support SMP. In my case, there is a third
option, linux enterprise.
