compiling the kernel

I upgraded from RH 6.2 to RH 7.0. I had been running the 2.2.17
kernel under 6.2, which I had compiled from the source. I attempted
to re-compile it under 7.0, but the compile fails, complaining:
checksum.S:231: badly punctuated parameter list in #define
Since I was once able to compile from that version of the kernel
source, I assume that I somehow screwed up the upgrade from RH 6.2
to RH 7.0. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might have
done wrong?
