I used to have a Trident 9660 and Xconfigurator would decide it was a 9680,
which would then try to fry the monitor.
Use xf86config (curses-based) or install all that's needed to make
XF86Setup work (pre-7.0 does it, I haven't seen it in 7.0 and haven't
looked into whether or not it can be done) and use it (graphical) and
choose your own settings. Both work much better than letting the stupid
autoprobe stuff find the wrong settings.
Hope you have the settings for the monitor already. Packard Bell can be
somewhat hard to locate, depending on which company made it for them.
