can't get bash prompt during install

I am trying to install redhat 6.2 on a machine with asus a7v and
promise ata100 hd controller. (I would try redhat 7, but the c compiler in
that distrib is screwed up I know and so think 6.2 would be less painful).
I have found info on how to install redhat 6.2 on my set-up. BUT....
the install requires that I am able to get the bash prompt. According to
Redhat docs, the way to do it is to hit ctrl-alt-F2. When I do this,
nothing happens. Other ctrl sequences work as described by the docs. But I
can't get the bash prompt.
Can anyone tell me how to get the bash prompt during the installation?
Thanks very much for any help.
