Well, with those errors (10 & 16) I'd say it's likely something to do with
password, username or protocol.
Have you tried dialing with minicom & starting pppd manually? There's a
section in the ppp howto on that, and also one about using wvdial (which I
never read) that might shed some light.
Also, have you gone through setting it up with the network configuration
tool on the control-panel?
There's a down'n'dirty method that doesn't take long and includes (only
quick-scanned this and don't know the quality) instructions for minicom.
Might be of some help. It mentions 6.1 but, the methods used stil apply.

If you've tried it the other ways with success, I can't imagine why it
wouldn't work with wvdial. I used to use it and it ran like a charm first
try for me.
