modem drops line

Hi,
I have couple of questions:
In RH 6.0 where is the modem dialup config file that contains the
modem init string?.
Sendondly, i use kppp to dial out to my ISP and i see the modem
drops the line after sometime (maybe the ISP modem is the one
causing the error .. ). It is Hays compatible (Newcom),
i was using it with my Macintosh.  What feature setting in a modem
can remedy this problem?.
