gdm was running but seem to have been murdered

dear redhat Gurus
My SVGA X server was running alright.I issued the command mem= 128 for 
obvious reasons.That didn't solve the purpose.After that my XServer wont 
start keeps on giving the following messsage from time to time
"According to /var/run//gdm.pid gdm was running but seem to have been 
murdered.Please Help Thankx.
