If I recall what I heard correctly, it had to do with the hassle of
identifying which CD-ROM the packages are on.  Because the names, sizes,
and the number of installed packages varies very widely (think Custom
Install) the installer would have had to keep track of what was where in
order to handle the switch properly -- and possibly do it multiple times.
IANAD, so take all this as what it is -- a support guy guessing at the
problem.  The only thing I know for sure is that multiple mounts/switching
mounts was looked at when they were considering what to do, and was
rejected in favor of the single-directory method.

The anaconda team doesn't have an official development site.  If you've
got patches and ideas, run them past redhat-devel list or notify Dr. Mike,
Matt Wilson, or one of the other developers listed in the source.
