SMP & Sound

What is SMP ?

I tried to install my SBLive and it (the SBLive install script) tells me
that my kernel must not have SMP support but coundn't find an option in
xconfig to turn it off ( I've never diddled with my kernel before).

Why do/don't I want SMP support ? 
How do I change it ?
What will happen if I change it ?
