In my XF886Config-4 file, just before the line you've mentioned, there's also:
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
Anyway, login to a console as the root user, run mouseconfig and select your
mouse type. Mouseconfig will then make the necessary changes to the
XFree86 config files.
