at a root console prompt (either in X or not), run

setup

which has an option for system services. You can go through the list and
make sure the services are turned on. The services you turn on will only be
turned on in the runlevel you are currently in. To verify which runlevels
are on for which service, run

chkconfig --list sshd
chkconfig --list sendmail

or any other services you want to know about. The result should look
something like:

sshd           	0:off	1:off	2:on	3:on	4:on	5:on	6:off
sendmail       	0:off	1:off	2:on	3:on	4:on	5:on	6:off
