Help: Kingston KNE111TX cards are slow

I installed (2) Kingston KNE111TX cards into my RH 7.1 machine
While the cards appear to be working , they appear rather sluggish
When I telnet to port 25 to get to sendmail it takes forever
however when doing it from the console it flies as expected.

I am using the tulip drivers for the cards. Could there by a
routing problem on my internal network if so what should I be looking for.


When running it as a proxy server with squid it appears ok as does access to
my
apache server.


any ideas would be helpful
