Leonard, Karen,
Thanks, Leonard. I had worked that out myself.
For an update, I have tried all that everyone who has replied on the
list has suggested with the same result, that is: I am unable to
install ANY network using RH 7.1.
I have changed NICs and tried a genuine NE2000, a NE1000, a
couple of Intel 10/100 cards, etc. None will auto detect.
I have posted to several lists and it appears that I am not the only
person having this problem, it seems that it has been like this
since RH 7.0.
Right now, I have reluctantly ditched the RH 7.1 CD's and am
busily installing Debian. Now I have to learn the vagaries of a new
distro. Happily, with Debian, the network auto-detects and installs
without a problem. The sad thing is that my machine is in 100
pieces because I have been swapping NICs and VGA, changing
IRQ and IO etc around to see if that will help with the RH 7.1
install. Now, I have to re-assemble the machine, find all the
screws and clear my desk so I can do something productive.
In closing, thanks to everyone who offered help, the fact still
remains that if I do nothing else but install RH 6.2, all is fine and
the network works, in fact it all works! If I try to install RH 7.0 or
RH 7.1, the network NEVER auto detects, no matter what I try and
I have been trying to install this distro for nearly two weeks now. I
have tried all options offered plus many more. I am tired of reading
the f****** manual, looking up URLs and seeking help on lists.
Unfortunately, my five year love affair with RH is over. If Debian
works out for me, I will change my customer base (some 130
installations over 26 sites) over to Debian and soldier on. Why RH
has issued ineffective CDs, I will never know. Their previous distros
were fine. NONE of their support people care to answer my
questions. They seem to have developed the M$ support
philosophy (what ever that is, I'm still waiting on the phone...)
