RS485 Port woes.. (help out our spanish speaking friend...)

 I have RedHat 6.2 running on a IBM
4694-001 computer and need to use the OCIA (RS485) ports for the
bar code reader, the printer and the cash drawer. Linux does not
find them or recognize the parallel in spite of being formed like
standard in the BIOS. In the drivers misc directory exist several
source programs for parallel ports.  Should I compile and install
one of the modules there so that Linux finds my ports?
