Re: [nylug-talk] Re: linux and Optiumum Online

I was not rying to keep it to myself, its just that to be truthful I am not
quite sure what the exact problem was. When things did not work I began to
experiment. For instance I hooked the cable modem up to a windows box and
ran winipcfg and found that the same ip address was continually being
assigned, so I set my card in the linux box to the same address using RH 7.0
Network Configurator. Once I entered a ip address and netmask it filled in
the two fields called Network and Broadcast. When I erased the ip and
netmask that I entered those field settings remained, I did not think much
of it. I did some searching and found a post from someone who had the
service in another county and they listed a couple of nameservers used in
that county and said that I need rrclientd. I entered those in the Network
Configurator under the Names tab and when I entered the command ifup eth0
instead of "failed" for determining ip address, it succeeded. When I ran
ifconfig it listed eth0 as running but it did not list the ip address. I was
told that that information should be listed. So I went back to Network
Configurator and I started thinking about those two fields Network and
Broadcast, because you see I could not even use my browser, ( it could not
resolve names). So I deleted eth0 and then recreated it, checked the dhcp
option, then typed ifup eth0 and then ifconfig and there was my ip address
and my browser worked. So if anyone out there gets this Optimum Online cable
internet connection, which is quite fast and does let me run a server, (well
they dont let me, but it works:-) anyway if you have a problem let me know I
can probably help. As to why it did not work in the beginning, before I
started experimenting, I don't know. Optimum Online no longer uses rrclientd
or rrlogin so don't even bother, as a NYLUG member (who was nice enough to
reply), so kindly informed me. I will say, the service is great and I
followed some earlier advice on one of the lists about chosing a second
network card that requires a different driver module, (when you have two in
the same box), so I am using a Linksys LNE100TX and a 3com 905c the linksys
uses tulip and the 3com uses a different one. The 3com card was easier to
configure but more expensive. I chose it because it was listed on the RH
site as very compatible. So anyway one card connects to the modem and the
other to my private class C network. I learned all this online from reading
messages posted on lists like this one and How-To's. This whole Linux
learning curve was frustrating at first but I can honestly say that I prefer
GNU/Linux over Windows. I would like once again to thank all those kind
enough to reply, I am still working on the ip chains and firewall but I now
have tons of resources. I wonder, does anyone know if the TrinityOS document
is current for RH 7.0?
