When you run "testparm", what is the output? Does it complain about the
configuration file?
What happens when you run "netstat -na"? Do you see UDP port 137/138 and TCP
port 139?

All,
Alex -- thanks for those suggestions. I changed my samba configuration file
so that 'local master = no'. That should take care of one of my problems.
Still, I can't connect to my RH computer via samba. I have tried stopping
and restarting smbd and nmbd multiple times, I've rebooted my win2000
machine many times, and I even rebooted my RH box (shouldn't be necessary).
Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Bryan

Look to make sure a few things are so.
Make sure the smbd and nmbd daemons are running....they could have died for
some reason or another.
In your smb.conf file, make sure "local browse master = no". This would
solve the problem of samba messing up your workgroup.

Subject: samba problem
All --
Any ideas on further troubleshooting for me?
I use samba to share files between my RH6.2 and my Win2000 machines. Two
days ago, everything was working well, but as of yesterday, I can't connect
from my Win2000 to my RH6.2 via samba. When I try to connect via the
network neighborhood, I get an error message (after a long pause) stating
that the network path is not found. I have tried to connect manually using
the 'net use' command line function with no luck (error message 121, 'The
semaphore timeout period has expired').
Meanwhile, my RH6.2 machine is logging errors in the smb.log:
[2001/06/14 12:06:59, 0] lib/util_sock.c:write_socket_data(545)
write_socket_data: write failure. Error = Broken pipe [2001/06/14
12:06:59, 0] lib/util_sock.c:write_socket(571)
write_socket: Error writing 5 bytes to socket 6: ERRNO = Broken pipe
[2001/06/14 12:06:59, 0] lib/util_sock.c:send_smb(759)
Error writing 5 bytes to client. -1. Exiting
[2001/06/14 12:07:09, 0] lib/util.c:matchname(1804)
Again, all was well 2 days ago. I can still ping between machines, and I
can use ssh to log onto my RH box. I have used rpm --verify to show that my
samba installation is not corrupted.
One other thing I have noticed. In the nmb.log, my RH machine likes to
wrestle the role of 'local master browser' away from another computer in my
workgroup. When this happens, it screws up everyone in my workgroup --
can't see all of the other machines in the workgroup and even some
workgroups are missing from the entire network.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bryan
