Hi Patty,
The corruption didn't come as a result of an installation.
The /boot partition is only 54MB large.
To our amazement, when the system was rebooted, the user
mistyped "lilo" in response to the lilo prompt, as opposed
to "linux" or simply hit the RETURN key.
The system could not locate this "lilo" kernel and somehow
corrupted its LILO master boot record! Maybe someone is
brave enough to try this to see if it is reproducible.

You must have installed lilo on a disk beyond the 1024 cylinder boundary.
I thought RedHat 7.1 used the new lilo which doesn't have this problem...
