Try using the testparm utility, it sounds like you may have a path
incorrect in your smb.conf file.

TMAN, we just hit this one in class. Win98 (in fact win95B and up) turn
on encrypted passwords by default. Samba by default uses unencrypted
passwords. You have to either turn on "use unencrypted passwords" in
win98 or tell samba to use encryped passwords AND use SMBPASSWD to add a
password on the linux box.
There's an issue between the program windows uses to encrypt passwords
and the one Linux uses, so you have to use smbpasswd to manage windows9x
encrypted password users.
