how do I apply kernel patch 2.4.2-ac7 to linux-2.4.2.tar

Hello list;
Silly question I'm sure. I have been trying to get a kernel patched for
some time now.
I downloaded linux-2.4.2.tar.bz2 and patch-linux-2.4.2-ac7.bz2

As root I cp them into /usr/src/linux then 'cd /usr/src/linux
Then 'bunzip2 *.bz2'
Ok now I have /usr/src/linux/linux-2.4.2.tar and patch-linux-2.4.2-ac7

I have tried all kinds of combinations of patch
e.g.
patch -p0 < patch-linux-2.4.2-ac7
patch -p1 < .. .. ..

patch -p0 linux-2.4.2.tar patch-linux-2.4.2-ac7
patch -p1 linux-2.4.2.tar patch-linux-2.4.2-ac7

-p0 cannot find the input file

-p1 starts to patch, get up to #5 then dies on the Documents directory and asks
for a file name:

I have deleted and 'bunzip2 linux-2.4.2.tar.bz2' the file each time.
I have tried it in /usr/src and /usr/src/linux as well as ~

What is the correct procedure? - I understand that the 'acX' patches must be
applied to the base unpatched kernel. Which is what linux-2.4.2.tar.bz2 is.

I have tried this under 2.2.16-22, 2.2.18 and 2.4.2 kernels, all as root
Thanks
