Re: Netscape 6 on Linux RH 7?

Hello,

I've got a 400MHZ processor, 128M of Ram, 32M video card, sitting on a Red Hat 7 install and Netscape 6 is running slower than Netscape 4.x.. I wouldn't mind if it was just a bit slower as there are a number of neat features that I'd like to take advantage of. However, I shouldn't be noticing the choppy screen displays & long delays in loading pages, etc. Any ideas on speeding this up?

I've got similar results with Mozilla 0.8...

I'm running Netscape 6.0 under Redhat version 6.0 and it works fine. Just make sure you have at least 64 Mb of RAM or greater available otherwise it will run pathetically slooooow!! I tried running it on my 166mhz 32 Mb machine and man was it ever slow city!! I wound up having to run it across my network on a slightly faster machine with more memory. Otherwise it seems to run fine on RH 6.x.

Overall performance ? Like most Netscape's, it chugs along. Netscape 6.0 is still problematic, it does crash now & then but that might have to do with the way I'm running it. It does seem to run Java much more smoothly than with the Netscape 4.7x versions. I can even keep the Java turned on if I want to and not experience constant crashes.

Overall ? netscape 6 looks promising, some nice added features, bloated, somewhat problematic, well worth a try.

Can I upgrade Netscape running under RH 6.2 to Netscape 6 / Gekko or is

All netscapes that run on Linux machines are crude and brutish... <grin>

BUT, you should be able to run NS6 on a 6.2 machine. YOu may have to
upgrade things like gtk, etc, tho, to get a version that NS6 will use...
BUt I am not completely sure of what to upgrade. I tried it once, and to
be honest, I didnt like it. Too broken.

If you want a netscape, try the latest 4.7x version (I think its 4.76) as
that seems fairly stable...
