svgalib error

Hi,

I just installed zgv that I plan to use with mutt to view saved images. 
I can only run it as root (or su). As a regular user I get the error msg:

svgalib: Cannot get I/O permissions.

Can anyone point me in the right direction -- which files needs the proper permission? I checked and don't have /dev/vga. Just /dev/video0, /dev/video1... some are owned as root:root others me:root.
