problem with ftp login being sooo slow

  hello, all

  i'm on a private net..
  ftp logins from a local node to machine A
  used to get connected within seconds before adding a
2nd NIC
  and adding GATEWAY & G..DEV to
/etc/sysconfig/network. to machine A
  seems like it might be that A is timing out while
trying to look up
  the local node's ip on the gateway device ?

  ii tried adding '192.168.2.99 node99' to machine A's
/etc/hosts but
  that has made no difference. 

  anybody have a secret incantation to get rid of the
ftp login stall ?
