RH& Install: Trident Video Card Blues

Hi everybody!
I just installed RH7 in an old 586 machine.  I have a Trident Microsystems video card (TGUI 9660 968X as recognized by the installation program).  The installation program correctly recognized my monito as being a Compaq S700.  However,  it couldn't set up the X-Windows environment.  It repeatedly failed.  I tried many combinations of clock chipsets and monitor resolutions and then gave up. 
Has anybody run into issues with video cards of these type (TRIDENT)?  Any suggestions on how to set my system even on a basic level ?
