In the pre-XFree86-4.0 days, I'd say run XF86Setup because I used it on
the board and got it to work fine. Now, though, the only thing I can
locate is one called xf86cfg to do the same thing.

I can't recall how well it works, but I do remember using it and getting
my S3 Virge working with it. It seems I had a problem or 2 with it but,
finally got it to behave long enough to let me get things set up.

I remember that card was always found as a 9680 by default with the likes
of Xconfigurator, and that I had to use XF86Setup to get it to allow me
to make all of the decisions about timing, memory, etc because using the
9680 settings tried hard to fry my monitor.

I'd suggest you try xf86cfg and see if it lets you make those decisions
and not allow anything to use what it probes by default. Bad things can
happen when those cards are probed and the defalt settings used!

If there are other ways (like maybe xf86config is still around), I'm not
aware of them, though you can always try manually editting the config
file if you can get the proper settings to do it with (not for the faint
of heart or impatient when doing trial-and-error).
