Why dont you use fetchmail instead of getmail?
fetchmail will get your mail and deliver it to your SMTP agent which will
then deliver it to your users, you dont need to worry about this mailbox
format etc

the mbox format the detination is ~user/Mailbox , ie in my case it would
be /home/grendel/Mailbox, but please consider fetchmail
