an intersting rpm update problem

  i've pared down the RH6.2 install to 160+ packages.
  when i try:

% rpm -Uvh kernel-smp-2.2.17-14.i686.rpm
  
  rpm issues the following complaint:

     rpmlib(VersionedDependencies) <= 3.0.3-1 is needed
by kernel-2.2.17-14

  when i have a full RH6.2 (custom/everything) install
  i can install the kernel-smp rpm w/o any trouble

  if i search the requires i see several packages with
the 
  VersionedDependency requirement.
  but a 'provides' search doesn't show any package ?
  it's gotta be rpm that supplies this, but i can't
figure out how !

  can anyone help me ?
