You can also ask qmail to deliver to /var/spool/mail/username format, just
ask it to run procmail and procmail will deliver to
/var/spool/mail/username

You dont need to do anything, pine will automatically access
/var/spool/mail/username.

If you want qmail to deliver to /var/spool/mail/username format on your
lanserver, copy the /var/qmail/boot/proc as /var/qmail/rc , and make sure
procmail is installed on your system.
As for your 6.2 workstation there is no need to worry about it,
/var/spool/mail/username is automatically used by many progrma like PINE
etc.
